First United Methodist Church, Terrell, Texas — Historic Restoration / Roof Replacement
Size 8,500 SF
Built in 1900
Designed by
Architect James E. Flanders
Start Date May 23, 2007
Completed March 1, 2008 / December 2021

The building is surrounded by an elaborate wooden cornice that supports an integral gutter at the base of the metal roofing.
Three layers of existing roofing were removed, unsound wood decking was replaced, and rotted rafters repaired before the new prefinished stamped metal shingle roof was installed.
A new shop-made, soldered flat seam roof was installed at low pitch roof areas. Applied pressed tin wall cladding was added to match historic profiles at the north elevation.
At the cornice level, new flat seam metal gutters were installed, bead-board soffits replaced, and several new custom wooden brackets were reproduced to exchange the damaged and missing brackets. All of the cornice and downspouts were painted after repairs were completed.
2021 Restoration included repainting the exterior including steeples, cornices, windows & doors, wainscot and porches.
